Medical experts in the US believe that the virus could only be a few mutations away from evading the vaccines completely. The statement comes in the backdrop of the US witnessing a surge in Covid-19 cases fueled by the Delta variant.

They said that individuals infected with Delta, vaccinated or unvaccinated, have higher viral loads and can easily pass on the virus to others.

Covid-19 could be 'just a few mutations' away from evading vaccines

WHAT?

Medical experts in the US believe that the virus could only be a few mutations away from evading the vaccines completely.

HOW?

The statement comes in the backdrop of the US witnessing a surge in Covid-19 cases fuelled by the Delta variant of the virus, per the report.

It added that individuals infected with Delta - vaccinated or unvaccinated - have higher viral loads and can easily pass on the virus to others. The World Health Organization has termed the variant as the "fittest" variant so far since it is easily transmissible and may cause severe disease.

A study conducted by researchers in China found that people infected with the Delta variant carry 1,000 times more viral load in their noses compared to the original strain, per NDTV. The scientists believe that the Delta and Alpha variants could also possibly combine their mutations to produce an even more infectious strain.

The current vaccines have been formulated in a manner that targets the coronavirus' spike protein. The future mutations could possibly change the characteristics of the spike protein making it difficult for the vaccines to fight the virus.
